Stein loves to play with language and the sounds that words can make. This is an example of that, but it could also be taken literally to mean a door, such as a portal, and then a do or, such as a “doer” or “do it or don’t”. This could mean that there is a portal that one can either walk into or ignore. It seems that Stein is more of a “doer” since she is writing a poem with so many bold metaphors for something that wasn’t acceptable at the time. The door is also presented as a portal that she must go through in order for self-authorization and to archive what she wants through her writing and through love.
